KNOWING CHRIST AS GOD

A Sermon by Wayne Camp

SERIES TEXT: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

INTRODUCTION TO SERIES: With this message I am beginning a series of sermons which I am calling, Knowing Christ. Paul begins the text which I have just read with the words, "That I may know him." I would remind you that this man was already saved but he had a burning, ever-present desire to know everything he could possibly know about the Lord Jesus Christ. He counted this knowledge as a wonderful treasure. Listen to what he says in verse 8. Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.

And, I am reminded of the words of Jesus in his mediatorial prayer. John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I also member those well-know words of Paul found in 2 Timothy 1:12 I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

The importance of knowing Christ is brought out in the First Epistle of John. He writes in 1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. And again, 1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

This endeavor to know Christ, to know all that we may be able to learn of him from the written word is one of the most important endeavors we can embark upon. In the past I have brought a series on the preeminence of Christ, and another one called Christ is All. Yet, my thirst to Know Christ has not been satisfied nor has my desire to have you know him been fulfilled.

Together, therefore, we will embark upon yet another series of studies in the person and work of the great God and our Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ. I trust when it is finished we may be able to say with new and greater meaning, "I know whom I have believed!"

TEXT: Jn. 1:1-3

INTRO: We will start at the beginning. John wrote, John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Before the angels were created, before there was a solar system, before there was any created beings or things there was God. There was God the Father, God the Word, and God the Spirit. These three Persons were co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent. These three beings were glorious, holy, sovereign, and one in purpose and will.

If we are to know Christ, we must first understand as much as possible of his deity, his eternal being, his glory before the world was. We must see that he is God of very God. We must see that all things were made by him and for him. We must see that he was God, he is God, and he will ever be God.

How do we know that he was truly God, God of very God, as truly God as the Father and the Spirit? How do we know that he is fully God, not some lesser God, not some minor God, but fully God? There is an abundance of evidence in Scripture to support our contention that the Word who was with God was every bit and eternally God.

I. SCRIPTURE SPEAKS OF HIS ETERNAL EXISTENCE SHOWING HIM TO BE ETERNAL GOD

A. His goings forth have been from everlasting. Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

B. He was with the Father before the world was spoken into existence. John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

C. He was God in the beginning, in eternity. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

D. David ascribes an immutable eternality to Jesus Christ.

1. He declares God to be eternal. Psalm 102:24-27 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

2. Paul applies this passage to Jesus Christ. Hebrews 1:10-11 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment.

E.  John the Baptist declared the eternality of Christ. John 1:15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

1. John was conceived and was born six months before Christ was conceived and born.

2. Yet, John dates the existence of Christ before his. John 1:30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

F.  He, according to his own statement, existed before Abraham. John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

II.  THE DEITY OF CHRIST IS DECLARED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AS CONFIRMED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

A. Isaiah saw Jehovah high and lifted up, surrounded with every circumstance of majesty, and this is applied to Christ. Isaiah 6:1-3 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. John 12:41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

B. Consider also Psa. 68:17-18 and compare these verses with Eph. 4:8-9

1. David speaks of God in Psalm 68:17-18 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

2. Paul applies it to Jesus Christ in Ephesians 4:8-9 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

C.   Compare Isa. 7:14 with Mat. 1:22-23

1. Isaiah speaks of a person who will be born who will be called "God With Us." Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

2. Matthew applies this to Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:22-23 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

D.  Compare Micah 5:2 with Mat. 2:6

1. Micah speaks of one who will come forth from Bethlehem whose goings forth have been eternal. Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

2. The chief priests and scribes confirm that this is where the Christ is to be born. Matthew 2:4-6 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

E.  Compare Malachi 3:1 with Luke 1:76.

1. Malachi speaks of a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord to come to his temple. Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

2. Zacharias, the Father of John the Baptist applies this verse to John and Jesus Christ. Luke 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways.

III.   THE NAMES OF GOD ARE GIVEN TO CHRIST SHOWING HIS DEITY

A. He is called God's Son in a manner that is not applied to believers or the elect angels.

1. In Psalm 2:7 he is the Son. Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

2. God declared him to be his Son in a manner he never declared anyone else to be his son. Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

B.   He is called the great God and is clearly the Lord Jesus Christ. Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.

C. Thomas called him both Lord and God. John 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

D. Paul does not hesitate to call him God. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

E. John declares emphatically that the word who was made flesh was God. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

F. He is God blessed forever. Romans 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

G. He is the true God. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

H. He is creator of all things and he who built all things is God. Hebrews 3:4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

IV.  THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD ATTRIBUTED TO CHRIST PROVING HIS DEITY

A. We have already seen that he has the attribute of eternality. John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

B. He is declared to be immutable. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

C. He is declared to be omniscient. John 2:24-25 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. John 21:17 Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.

D. He declared himself to be omnipresent. Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

E. He is sovereign, an attribute that can only belong to God.

1. Even in his mediatorial prayer he set forth his sovereignty. John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

2. Everything comes under his authority. Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

3. All things were created for his pleasure and according to his purpose. Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

V.   THE WORKS OF GOD ARE ATTRIBUTED TO CHRIST SHOWING HIS DEFINITE DEITY

A. He is creator.

1. All things were made by him and nothing was made without him. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

2. All things are by him. 1 Corinthians 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

3. God created all things by him. Ephesians 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.

4. Every thing in heaven and on earth, every thing visible or invisible, all thrones, principalities, or powers were established by him. Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.

B.  He had power to forgive sins, something only God can do. Mark 2:10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,).

C. Judging of men and angels. John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

D. He is worshipped and only God is to be worshipped.

1. His worship is to be equal to the worship of the Father. John 5:23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

2. Every knee will bow to him. Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.

3. Even the holy angels must worship him and did so when he was born. Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

E.  When Stephen was dying he worshipped him. Acts 7:59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

F. In the administration of baptism he is worshipped and honored equally with the Father and the Spirit. Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

VI.  IF JESUS WAS NOT GOD, HE WAS JUSTLY PUT TO DEATH

A. The law required any who falsely set themselves forth as God to be put to death. John 19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

1. He declared himself to be the Son of God. John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

2. This made him equal with God. John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

3. Under examination by the high priest, he did not deny being the Son of God; he affirmed it. Matthew 26:63-66 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

4. God justified him, justified his claims of deity, by raising him out of the dead. Romans 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

B.   Under the law, anyone who enticed another to idolatry was to be put to death and a mere man who claimed deity was guilty of breaking that law. Deuteronomy 13:6-9 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

CONC: The deity of Christ shines forth even when it is veiled in his humanity. He is truly the seed of the woman but he is bruising the head of Satan. As prophet he was taken from among his brethren but he is such a prophet that failure to listen to him and believe in him carries the penalty of eternal damnation. He is a child born of a virgin but his is God with us. He is a child given but he is called Mighty God and Everlasting Father. He is the offspring of David according to the flesh but is the Son of God and Jehovah our Righteousness according to the spirit. He is the messenger of the covenant sent by God but the Lord who comes to his Temple also. He is born of a virgin in a stable in Bethlehem but is the One whose goings forth have been from everlasting, even forever more. He is a man who died about the age of 33 but is also a King whose kingdom shall have no end. He is the man Christ Jesus who is also the Lord from heaven. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

KNOWING CHRIST AS THE WORD MADE FLESH OR KNOWING CHRIST AS MAN

A Sermon by Wayne Camp

SERIES TEXT: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

TEXT: John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (KJV)

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. (KJV)

1 Timothy 2:5 For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the MAN Christ Jesus. (KJV)

INTRO: Which would be worse, to deny the Deity of Jesus Christ or to deny his real humanity? Neither would be worse than the other for to deny either means eternal damnation. Those who deny his deity are guilty of not believing the record of God’s Son. Those who deny his perfect and complete humanity are guilty of the same crime. Furthermore, we learn from John that it is the spirit of anti-christ which causes anyone to deny that Christ is come in the flesh.

This message is Knowing Christ As The Word Made Flesh Or Knowing Christ As Man.

I. TO KNOW CHRIST MEANS TO KNOW HIM AS ONE WHO WAS DEFINITELY MADE FLESH

A. He was no mere phantasm or theophany; he did literally become flesh as our first text declares. Jn. 1:14

B. God had sworn to David he would be made flesh. Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.

C. Paul confirms that Jesus was made flesh of the seed of David. Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.

D. Concerning the flesh, Jesus descended from the Jews. Romans 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

E. In the light of Paul's bold statement to Timothy, there can be no doubt that the word was made flesh. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

F. Those whom he would redeem were flesh and blood, therefore he took on him a body of flesh and blood so that he might be as near a kinsman as possible. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.

1. He must be made like us in every way except for sin. Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

2., He must be all of one with us if he would be our redeemer. Hebrews 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.

G. If he would be our great High Priest he must be taken from among us and be identified with us, therefore he did not take on him the nature of angels but the human nature of man. Hebrews 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

H. I will deal with the necessity of his being made man another message but felt it should be mentioned in this message if we are to fully appreciate the fact that he was made flesh.

I. I would remind you again of the importance of this matter in the light of John's declaration that it is the spirit of antichrist that causes one to deny that Christ is come in the flesh. 1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 2 John 7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

II. TO KNOW CHRIST WE MUST KNOW SOMEWHAT OF THE NATURE OF HIS BEING MADE FLESH

A. We must know that he became a man and man is flesh. Philippians 2:5-7 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

B. We must know that the expression, the word was made flesh, means more than merely the meat that was on his bones. Jn. 1:14

1. Francis Turretin said, "Here the word 'flesh' is not to be taken strictly for one part of man, but broadly and synecdochically for the whole human nature, including the soul with the flesh."

2. A. W. Pink wrote, "The plain meaning of these words is, that our Divine Savior took upon Him human nature. He became a real Man, yet a sinless, perfect man.

3. Hengstenberg wrote, "Flesh means all that man is . . . there can be no doubt that man is here designated as flesh to call attention to the depth of condescension in the Logos."

4. Thomas Whitelaw wrote that the word flesh in this verse means "human nature in its totality, as consisting of a true body and a reasonable soul."

5. Whitelaw quotes another who says, "The word sarx describes the whole man, as he consists of body and soul, as a sensuous, earthly being, in antithesis to God."

6. John Gill said, "Flesh here signifies, not a part of the body, nor the whole body only, but the whole human nature, consisting of a true body, and a reasonable soul . . . it was a real human nature, and not a phantom, or appearance."

7. Matthew Henry wrote, "This intimates . . . that he was really and truly man."

8. It refers to his entire humanity. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

9. His being made flesh obviously means he took upon himself a complete human nature; as truly man as is any other man.

D. We must know that he was formed in his mother's womb just as we were.

1. He was not created in the manner that Adam was, that would not have made him our near kinsman.

2. He brought no element of his human nature and being from heaven, he was given his complete human nature in the womb of Mary.

3. He was miraculously conceived but naturally formed in the womb of Mary. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Matthew 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Matthew 1:20-23 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Luke 1:31-35 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

4. He is called the seed of the woman. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

5. He was made of a woman. Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.

6. He is called the fruit of the womb. Luke 1:42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

7. He was born in the same manner that all children are born. Psalm 22:9-10 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

E. We must know that he grew up and developed physically as any other child would develop.

1. He nursed his mother's breasts for nourishment just as any other child. Psalm 22:9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.

2. He developed in stature as does any other child and young man. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

F. We must know that he developed mentally as do other children. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

G. We must know that his flesh was the same as our flesh.

1. He was a man and all men are of the same kind of flesh. 1 Corinthians 15:39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.

2. He had the same kind of blood as we have for he was a man and all men have the same kind of blood. Acts 17:26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.

3. Those whom he would redeem are partakers of flesh and blood therefore he took the same flesh and blood as they. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.

G. We must know wherein the human nature of Christ differs from ours.

1. It was conceived miraculously. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Matthew 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

2. It was especially prepared by God. Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.

3. It was untainted by sin. Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

4. He took on the likeness of sinful flesh but not the sinfulness of the fleshly nature. Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.

5. For him to take on our sins, God had to make him sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

III. TO KNOW CHRIST WE MUST KNOW SOMETHING OF THAT WHICH HE ACCOMPLISHED BY BEING MADE FLESH

A. He gave us the true bread from heaven which we must eat by faith if we are to have eternal life. John 6:51-56 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

B. He made it possible that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us in spite of the weakness of our flesh. Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

C. He abolished the enmity of the law by keeping and fulfilling it in a human nature like ours. Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.

D. He did every thing necessary to present us holy, unblamable, and unreprovable in his sight. Colossians 1:21-22 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblamable and unreproveable in his sight.

E. He revealed God in his flesh. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

F. His glory was the glory of the only begotten of the Father. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

G. In him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

H. He destroyed the power of Satan and delivered his people from the fear of death. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.

I. He has opened up the way for us to enter into heaven. Hebrews 10:19-20 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.

J. He suffered for our sins and brought us to God. 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. 1 Peter 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin.

K. He made peace for us through his blood. Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be] things in earth, or things in heaven.

CONC: In another message we will consider the absolute necessity of the incarnation, the necessity of the Word being made flesh. In this message I have tried to concentrate primarily on the fact of his being made flesh, on knowing him as man, and on the nature of that humanity which he assumed. It is essential that we know him as God for he is God of very God. It is equally, and I did say equally essential that we know him as man. For to deny his humanity is a mortal sin and the spirit of antichrist. It is a fundamental of true faith in Jesus Christ.

I have said many times that if you do not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ you cannot be saved. It is equally true that if you do not believe in the humanity of Christ you cannot be saved. It was in the flesh that he was put to death. It was his flesh and blood that he gave for our eternal life. To deny that is to deny the very bread and drink of eternal life.

KNOWING CHRIST AS INFINITE AND FINITE

By Wayne Camp

TEXT FOR SERIES: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

TEXT: John 2:23-25 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

Acts 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

INTRO: These four verses that I have read set forth what are seeming contradictions. In the first two, it is set forth that Christ knew all things. He did not need for anyone to tell him what was in man for he knew all men. In the second, Peter declares that he knows all things. Then, we come to Jesus own admission that he does not know some things. He did not know the time of his return to the earth. In Acts 1:7 he tells his disciples that the Father has reserved some knowledge for himself.

But, how can this be? How can one person be omniscient on the one hand, knowing all things, and on the other not knowing some things? Borrowing a question from A. W. Pink, I ask, "How is it possible that the same person should be at the same time infinite and finite, omnipotent and helpless?"

That is the question I want to try to answer in this message. In the first message of this series, I set forth the Godhood of Jesus Christ. In that message I proved from the word of God the true Deity of Jesus Christ. In the second message I set forth the humanity of Jesus Christ and showed from Scripture that he is truly man, as truly man as though he were not God.

In this message I want us to probe a little more into this union of two natures in the one theanthropic person, the Lord Jesus Christ. We will do so with the subject, Knowing Christ as Infinite and Finite.

I. KNOWING CHRIST BEING GOD AND YET BEING MAN

A. Knowing Christ as being God.

1. David declared him to be God. Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

2. Isaiah declared him to be God. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

3. John declared him to be God. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

4. Paul declared him to be God. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

B.  Knowing Christ as man.

1. Isaiah declared him to be man. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

2. John declared him to be man. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

3. Paul declared him to be man. Philippians 2:6-8 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

II.   KNOWING CHRIST AS ONE WHO IS CO-EQUAL WITH THE SPIRIT AND ONE WITH THE SPIRIT, YET IN NEED OF AND HAVING THE SPIRIT GIVEN TO HIM

A. As God he is co-equal and co-eternal with the Spirit.

1. In the work committed to in the covenant of grace the Holy Spirit is subject to the God the Son. John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

2. Note that in both cases the Son is the one sending the Spirit showing their relationship in the Godhead and in the covenant of grace.

B.  As man he is in need of the Spirit being upon him to enable him to do the many works given him by the Father. Isaiah 11:1-2 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

1. The Spirit was put upon the man Christ Jesus. Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

2. The Spirit was upon him to give him to declare the gospel. Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.

3. It was the Spirit of God that was upon him enabling him to go about to go about doing all the good he did. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

III.   KNOWING CHRIST AS KNOWING ALL THINGS AND YET NOT KNOWING SOME THINGS

A. As God he was all-knowing, all-wise, and infinite in his under standing. John 2:23-25 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

B. As man there were things he did not know.

1. It is obvious he did not know the day of his return to the earth. Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

2. As man he must be given the spirit of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Isaiah 11:2-3 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears.

3. As man he must grow in wisdom. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

IV.   KNOWING CHRIST AS ALL-POWERFUL AND YET NEEDING POWER TO DO THE WORK GIVEN HIM BY THE FATHER

A. As God he is the creator of all things, powerful enough to bring a universe into being at the word of his mouth. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

B. As man, he must be anointed with power if he is to do the miracles and might works given him to do.

1. Isaiah prophesied that he would be given the spirit of power. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

2. God did anoint him with power. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

3. God was with him in the performing of his miracles. John 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

4. It was with this God-given power that he was able to command the forces of nature to obey him. Luke 8:25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

5. It was this God-given power that gave him the ability to subdue all flesh and give eternal life to those given to him by the Father. John 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

6. It may have even been by this God given power that he was able to lay down his life and take it up again. John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

a. The life that he laid down and took up again was his human life.

b. He could only lay down his human life and take it up again.

c. This he did according to the commandment given him by the Father.

CONC: I want to conclude with some other things that could have been included in this message.

A. As God prayer was to be addressed to him; as man he often resorted to prayer to the Father.

B. As God he is to be feared; as man the spirit of fear was given to him. Isa. 11:1-3

C. As God he is the one who is present everywhere, the one whom the heaven of heavens cannot house; as man he could only be present at one place at a time.

Truly, we can say with Paul, "Great is the mystery of godliness." We may not be able to explain all of it. It is truly unique. There is no way to illustrate it. There is no example of it. This union of the two natures—deity and humanity—in the one theanthropic person of Jesus Christ is a wonderful declaration of the love, mercy and grace of God. Let us give him praise and glory and honor for it.

KNOWING THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY

OF THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

SERIES TEXT: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

TEXT: Jn. 6:51

INTRO: In the series thus far we have considered the fact that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly and really man. We saw the importance, yea, the absolute necessity of knowing him both as God and man. In this message we will consider the necessity of the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are two great mysteries that I have repeatedly meditated upon in the preparation of these messages. One it the Godhead. I do not understand, though I believe it whole-heartedly, how three Persons, Father, Word and Spirit can yet be One God. Three co-equal, co-eternal, co-existent Persons, yet one God, one Godhead. The second mystery is that which has to do with the hypostatic union of two separate and complete natures united in one Person, the Lord Jesus Christ. This one person is so truly God it is as though he were not man, and so truly man it is as though he were not God. A hypostatic union. He is not part God and part man. He is God. He is man.

But, let me assure you, this is what his work in the covenant of grace required. If he would die he must be man, because God cannot die. If that death would merit eternal life for an innumerable multitude he must be God, for not even a sinless man could merit eternal life for one sinner. If he would offer a sacrifice for sins as our great high priest, he must have something to offer, therefore he took flesh and blood, a body prepared by God; if that sacrifice would so satisfy God that every charge against us would be settled forever, he must be God for the merits of that sacrifice to be so infinite as to satisfy God for every sin of an innumerable multitude.

Two great mysteriesCthree persons who are one God and one Person who has two complete natures.

I. TO KNOW CHRIST WE NEED TO KNOW THAT THE SCRIPTURES NECESSITATED HIS DEITY

A. Nothing could happen to him that was contrary to what was declared in the Scriptures.

B. Nothing could fail to happen to him if it was declared in Scripture. Luke 24:44 . . .all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

C. The veracity and integrity of God's word could not be diminished one bit and the truth mean anything.

D. The deity of Christ was declared in Scripture long before Christ was born.

1. Consider Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

2. Consider Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

3. See the fulfillment of this in Matthew 1:18-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

II.   TO KNOW CHRIST WE NEED TO KNOW THAT THE THINGS HE ACCOMPLISHED BY BEING MADE FLESH NECESSITATED HIS DEITY

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

1. The flesh and blood which he would give must have sufficient worth and merit to justify God giving eternal life on the grounds of it.

2. No human person, even a sinless man as Adam before the fall or the sinless man Jesus, could give his flesh and blood for the life of the world unless there is something that is united with that flesh and blood that makes it of infinite dignity, merit and worth.

3. It is the hypostatic union of the Divine nature with the human nature that lends it the infinite merit required for the giving of eternal life.

4. Even though we have seen that he received his human nature from being formed in the womb of Mary; he shows its infinite worth and merit, its power to give everlasting life, its power to cause us to never hunger or thirst again by calling it the bread from heaven. John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

5. If his human nature, his flesh and blood would be the bread and drink of eternal life, they must be so vitally united with the Divine nature as to be able to call them bread from heaven.

1. If we are to enter into heaven we must have a righteousness equal to that of God in its purity.

2. The law was weak through the flesh and no man could meet its demands.

3. Someone in the flesh must satisfy that holy law if that required righteousness is ever fulfilled.

4. The man Christ Jesus was made in our likeness, the likeness of sinful flesh.

5. That man, Jesus, must also be God the Son if his obedience would be of such infinite merit that it could be imputed to the account of all that innumerable multitude for whom he was obedient and for whom he paid the penalty of the law.

6. He abolished the enmity of the law by keeping and fulfilling it in a human nature like ours. Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.

1. I would remind you that this was accomplished in the body of his flesh through death.

2. I would also remind you that God must be in him if that grand work of reconciliation would be accomplished. 2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

D.  He revealed God in his flesh. 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1. His glory was the glory of the only begotten of the Father. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2. In him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

3. There is a manner in which the whole creation reveals God. Romans 1:19-20 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

a. Look into the heavens and they reveal his glory. Psalm 19:1-3 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Psalm 97:6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

4.  God revealed himself in different ways down through the ages.

5. God is revealed in his written word and that is a much fuller revelation of God than in nature, or in visions and dreams. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

6. God's greatest revelation of himself which man has every seen was in the person of Jesus Christ.

a. If we would behold his glory it must be in God the Word made flesh. Jn. 1:14

b. If we would see God we must see him in his Son made flesh and dwelling among us. John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

c. If we are to see the fulness of the Godhead we must see it bodily in the man Christ Jesus. Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

E.   He destroyed the power of Satan and delivered his people from the fear of death. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.

1. If he would destroy the one who has the power of death he must do it through death.

2. Since God cannot die he must partake of a nature that can die so he took on him flesh and blood.

3. But, if he would enter into the realm of death and by it have the power to destroy him who had the power of death, he most be more than a mere sinless man.

4. He must have power to give his life, not have it taken from him by man.

5. He must have power to lay down his life and take his life up again and this could only be done if he were God. John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

F.  He has opened up the way for us to enter into heaven. Hebrews 10:19-20 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.

1. Unfallen Adam did not have access to heaven but was confined to this earth even before his fall.

2. A mere sinless man could not open up a way into heaven for sinners merely on his human merits.

3. The blood of the one opening the way must be of such infinite worth that all who are redeemed by it can enter into the very presence of God.

4. The infinite worth of the shed blood of Jesus Christ must be attributed to the hypostatic union of the Divine nature with the human nature.

5. That union is such, and the Divine nature so affects the human nature that the blood of the Man Christ Jesus can properly and Scripturally be called the blood of God. Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

1. Let me remind you again that Christ's death was a death in the flesh; his deity did not die; God cannot die, he was put to death in the flesh, he suffered for sins in the flesh.

2. But, if that death was to serve its purpose and secure our justification, that suffering and death must have infinite worth and infinite merit.

3. That was achieved through the union of the Divine nature with the human nature, lending the human nature the Divine merit and infinite worth.

4. Because of this it is said that they crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

H.  He did all these things in the flesh and through his suffering and death in the flesh, but, it would have done us no good had all that he did in the flesh not received infinite worth and merit from the union of his Divine nature with his human nature.

III.  WE NEED TO KNOW THAT HE MUST BE GOD IF HE IS TO LAY HIS HAND UPON GOD

A. A mediator is not a mediator of one therefore the mediator could not be either God or man; he must be both God and man. Galatians 3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

B. If he would manifest God to us he must be God in the flesh. I Tim. 3:16

C. If he would set forth the exact, precise will of God he must be God. Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

D. If he would serve as the angel of the everlasting covenant of grace, he must be privy to that covenant and none were but the three persons of the Godhead. Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

E. If he would be our counsellor concerning the things of God he must be mighty God and everlasting father. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

CONC: He must be God with us. He must be the eternal Word made flesh and dwelling among us. A sinless man could never save if he were not also God, for salvation is of the Lord. God alone can save and he shall save he shall save his people from their sins, so he must be God and he was God. His glory was the glory of the only begotten of the Father. God is the God of all grace and he was full of grace. He was eternally rich but became extremely pure that we might be rich. In him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Yes, his name was called Emmanuel, God with us!

KNOWING THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY

OF THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST

A Sermon by Wayne Camp

SERIES TEXT: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

TEXT: Heb. 2:9-18

INTRO: In the first message in this series we saw that we must know Christ as God if we are to know God at all. In the second we saw that we must also know him as man. I pointed out that this knowledge of Christ both as God and man is essential to salvation. To deny either is damning in its effect. To deny the deity of Christ is condemnation and spiritual death. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. To deny the humanity of Christ is antichrist.

There is nothing in the word of God which has been the source of more error than the person of Jesus Christ. Some have denied that he was God. Others have denied that he was man. Some have claimed he was a created God while others claimed he was a mere phantasm and not literally man. Some have denied that he had a real human body while others have admitted that he had a human body but denied that he had human blood or a human soul and mind. Some have argued that he was actually two persons while others have said he was one person who was half God and half man. Some of those who denied that he had a true human body have denied that he really died. Some have argued that there is only one person in the Godhead and that this one person, known as Father, Son, and Spirit, became incarnate and suffered on the cross. It is evident that such a study as we are in is extremely important and should not be entered upon lightly, frivolously, or hurriedly. John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

In the message last Sunday we saw the absolute necessity of the deity of Jesus Christ. Today, we will see the absolute necessity of his being man. In this message I will not be seeking to prove his humanity as I did in the second message of the series. I will be showing the necessity of his being man. The first two points will be negative. First, We will see why as God only he could not perform the work that was necessary for our salvation. Secondly, We will see why he could not and did not take on him the nature of angels to fulfill the work given him by the Father. Thirdly, We will see the absolute necessity of his taking on him our nature, our likeness, and why it behooved him in all things to be made like us.

I. CHRIST JESUS MUST BE MAN FOR AS GOD ONLY HE COULD NOT PERFORM THE WORK THAT WAS NECESSARY FOR OUR SALVATION

A. God had an alternative to the Word being made flesh; he could have consigned us all to hell as he has the fallen angels, but he did not do that.

B. If God would save any of Adam's fallen posterity it was necessary that the Word be made flesh. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

C. As God only he could not mediate on the part of man for he could not lay his hand on man. Job 9:32-33 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

D. As God only he could not serve as our kinsman redeemer for he was not related to us. Ruth 3:9-13 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

1. This passage shows that a redeemer must be a near kinsman.

2. Further, it also shows that this redeemer must be as near a kinsman as possible.

3. As God only there is no way this near-kinsman relationship existed and the Eternal word could not fulfill it.

E.  As God only he could represent God but since the Saviour must be the covenant head of his people he must be of the same nature as we. Psalm 89:19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

F. As God only he could not serve as our great High Priest because only a man can serve as a high priest. Hebrews 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

1. As high and holy and wonderful as the eternal Word was in his Godhood, he could not qualify as our high priest because he was not a man.

2. As high and holy as he was in his Godhood, he had nothing which could be offered up in sacrifice to God.

G.  As God only he could render obedience to the law for he was the lawgiver.

H. As God he could not die and he must if he would deliver us from death.

1. God is eternally the same and the death of God would make him mutable.

2. God is from everlasting to everlasting and cannot die.

3. God does not even slumber or sleep; he certainly could not die. Psalm 121:4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

I.  As God alone he could not have shed his blood for as God alone he has no blood. Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

J. If I pursue this point any further, I will preach my last point as part of the first. These points should give us enough to see why God did not set upon a plan to redeem and save his people except through the incarnation of the eternal word in human flesh.

II.  WHY CHRIST DID NOT TAKE ON HIM THE NATURE OF ANGELS TO PERFORM THE WORK GIVEN HIM BY THE FATHER

A. He was not suffering for angels therefore he did not lay hold of their nature. Hebrews 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

B. Angels are not related to man in nature and he could not have been our kinsman redeemer if he had laid hold of the nature of angels and been made like them.

C. We needed a brother and no angel could be our brother. Song of Solomon 8:1 O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.

1. An angel could never have met this need expressed in this verse.

2. Christ must be the firstborn among many brethren and as an angel he could not have been. Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

D.  The remission of sins required the shedding of blood and angels have no blood to shed. Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

E. Had he taken hold of the nature of angels he could not have fulfilled every jot and title of the law for that would be impossible for an angel.

1. An angel is a non-sexual being and the law required circumcision.

2. As an angel he would have had no parents and the law required one to honor his parents.

III.   WHY THE ONE WHO WOULD SAVE US FROM OUR SINS MUST BE MADE IN OUR LIKENESS AND HAVE A HUMAN NATURE LIKE OURS

A. If it could have been done any other way, is it not logical that an all-wise God would have done it that way, rather than ask his Son to come into the world to suffer all that he suffered?

1. This seems to have been the thrust of one of Paul's statements to the Galatians. Galatians 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

2. If there had been another way then Christ's death was in vain. Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

B.  The weakness of law required that Christ come in the likeness of sinful flesh. Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.

C. The man who would be our High Priest and Saviour must have something to offer in sacrifice. Hebrews 8:3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

1. He offered his human body which was taken on for that very purpose. Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me. Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

2. He offered up his complete human nature, body, blood, and soul to God. Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

D.  If he would sanctify us he must be all of one nature with us. Hebrews 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.

E. Since death came by man, God required also that the resurrection out of the dead must come by man. 1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

F. Since by one man's offence many were made dead; God decreed that grace must come through the channel of a man. Romans 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

G. Since condemnation came by a man, justification must come by a man. Romans 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

H. Since death reigned by one man, righteousness must also reign by one man. Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

I. Since many were made sinners by the disobedience of a man, those who are made righteous must be made so by the obedience of one man. Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

J. He must take the nature of man if he is to destroy the one who had the power of the death of men. Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

K. If he would experience what we experience he must do so in our nature. Hebrews 4:15-16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

L. He must have a life that he could lay down in death and that required a human life; not divine life. John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

M. He must have a soul that could be sorrowful even unto death and that required a human soul. Matthew 26:38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

N. He must have a soul that could be made an offering for sin and only a human soul could be made an offering for sin. Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

O. If he who is in the form of God and equal with God in every divine perfection and attribute would die for men he must take upon himself the likeness of man. Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

P. If he would give his flesh and blood for our eternal life he must take on him that flesh and blood. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

Q. If he would open the way into heaven for his he must do so through the veil of his flesh. Hebrews 10:19-20 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.

R. If he is to be a prophet he must be raised up from among his brethren. Genesis 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

S. If he would be king of the Jews and one day sit on the throne of his Father David, he must be descended from David, and therefore a man. Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh. Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.

CONC: So much more could be said on this subject. He must be God, as we saw last Sunday. But, it is so important that he also be man. I will remind you of three of his great offices, all of which required him to be man. He is the Prophet of all prophets and as prophet he must be raised up from among his brethren (Deu 18:19. He is our great High Priest and as such he must be taken from among men (Heb. 5:1). He is king and to sit on David's throne he must be the seed and son of David (Rom. 1:30. He could not be prophet, priest or king if he had not been man. It is essential that we know him as man. It is exceedingly important that we understand and appreciate all that he did for us in becoming man. Great is the marvel, great is the wonder, great is the graciousness, great is the mercy in the great mystery God was manifest in the flesh!

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)KNOWING CHRIST AS JUDGE

A Sermon By Wayne Campbargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)

Series Text: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

SCRIPTURE: Jn 5:22-30

TEXT: John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son

Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

INTRO: Judgment is a prominent theme in the word of God. The Scriptures abound with passages that declare God as the moral ruler of men and thus, the judge. And, Scripture often sets forth the fact that God's judgment will be in perfect righteousness. It will not be tainted by the prejudices of men and there will be no courtroom antics such as are often seen in modern day trials.

The Bible represents God as the judge of nations and individuals. It declares him to be the judge of men and angels. Scripture also reveals that he will judge the world by Jesus Christ. Christ will be the person who sits as judge and executes judgment. One of the rewards of his humiliation is that as the Son of man he shall sit in judgment upon a wicked, unbelieving world. They brought him before the Sanhedrin for judgment. They brought him before Pilate for judgment. They brought him before Herod for judgment. He has been judged again and again in the court of public opinion. But, one day, all who have been his judges and deemed him unworthy of their trust shall come before him in judgment. If we are to know Christ as we ought, we must know him as Judge.

There will also be a judgment of the saved at the judgment seat of Christ. Our sins were judged at the cross. Our works will be judged at the Judgment seat of Christ. Rewards & loss of rewards will be the result of that judgment. There is no way we could come into a judgment that involved condemnation for right in the middle of the passage we read a moment ago these words are found, John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

 I. KNOW THAT THERE IS A JUDGMENT IN EVERY UNBELIEVER'S FUTURE

A. Jesus warned some that the judgment would be more tolerable for the wicked people of Sodom and Gomorrah than for them. Matthew 11:22-24 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

1. This passage does not mean the wicked residents will escape severe judgment.

2. Nor, as some have supposed, does it suggest their judgment is passed already in the fire and brimstone being rained upon them. That was only a foretaste of what is yet to come.

3. The verse obviously teaches that there is a judgment for all the unregenerate that is yet future.

B.  Jesus set forth a future judgment of the wicked in his discourse with some who did not believe in him. John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

C. God has appointed a time in the future when he will judge the world. Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

1. God appointed a time when the flood would come and it came.

2. God appointed a time when he would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and he did.

3. God appointed a time when Israel would go into bondage in Egypt and they did.

4. God appointed a time when he would bring Israel forth out of bondage and he brought them forth with a mighty hand.

5. God appointed a time when Christ would be born in Bethlehem and when the fulness of that time came the Saviour was born there.

6. God appointed a time, a specific day and hour when Christ would be crucified and no man could kill him until his hour was come.

7. God has appointed a time when Christ shall come again and he will come then, not before and not after the day appointed.

8. And, God has appointed a day in which he will judge all unbelievers before he casts them down into the lake of fire for everlasting punishment and that day will come and it will arrive according to the Divine appointment.

D.  This will be an awful day for unbelievers for it is specified as the time when his wrath and righteous judgment will be revealed. Romans 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

E. David wrote of this judgment with emphasis upon the fact that it will be in perfect righteousness, to the line and to the plummet of Divine standards. Psalm 9:7-8 But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. 8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

1. The fact that his judgment is yet future should not mislead any into thinking it will not come. Psalm 50:21-22 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

2. This judgment in righteousness will certainly come. Psalm 96:13 Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

F.  The wise man Solomon also warned that God would bring men into judgment for their sins. Ecclesiastes 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

G. Paul paints a word picture of this terrible judgment. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

H. John gives a more extensive description of this judgment of the wicked. Revelation 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

I. It is abundantly evident that there is a terrible judgment ahead for unbelievers.

II.  KNOW THAT THERE IS A JUDGMENT IN EVERY BELIEVER'S FUTURE

A. We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Romans 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

B. We will every one give an account of ourselves to God at this judgment. Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

C. We will be judged according to our works since we were saved, not according to our sins. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

D. Paul describes the judgment of the Lord's preacher's at this judgment which probably sets the pattern the judgment of other of God's children. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

III.  KNOW THAT JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD AND THE SON OF MAN, WILL BE THE JUDGE IN EVERY JUDGMENT

A. God the Father has delivered all judgment into his hands. John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.

B. That Christ will be the judge is an Old Testament doctrine as well as being taught in the New Testament. Psalm 9:7-8 But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

1. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be judge. Isaiah 11:1-4 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

2. Jeremiah prophesied that Jesus would be the judge. Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

C.  This judgment was committed to the Son by the Father for, among other things, his glory. John 5:22-23 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

D. Peter declared that he and his brethren were commissioned to preach that Christ was ordained to be judge. Acts 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

E. Paul, in his famous message delivered to the Athenians from Mars Hill, declared that the man Christ Jesus would be the judge. Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

F. Enoch preached that Christ would come and judge the wicked. Jude 14-15 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

G. It is evident from the charge which Paul gave to young Timothy that Christ will be the judge. 2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom.

H. It is obvious from his warning to false professors and religious leaders that Jesus Christ will sit as judge. Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

I. Jesus Christ is commissioned to judge and to make war against the wicked. Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. Jude 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

IV.  KNOW SOME REASONS FOR THE LORD JESUS CHRIST BEING THE JUDGE RATHER THAN THE FATHER OR SPIRIT

A. It is because it is fitting for his people when before the judgment seat that one who has faced all that we face is our judge. Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

B. It is because it is fitting and rewarding to the Son that, since his humiliation came in his humanity and his crucifixion was the crucifixion of his humanity, that he judge the world in his humanity as well as his deity.

1. It is as God that judgment has been committed to him. John 5:22-23 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

2. It is as man that he shall execute it. Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

C.  It is right that the one who suffered so much at the hands of men be the one who executes judgment upon them and casts them into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.

1. Jesus Christ will be the one who says, Depart from me. Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

2. Jesus Christ will be the one to whom every knee shall bow. Philippians 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

D.  It is fitting that those who have not believed on the Lord Jesus Christ be delivered up to him for judgment at the great white throne when he sits in all his awesome splendor.

E. It is fitting that he should be the one to cast all the wicked into the lake of fire that burns with fire and brimstone. Revelation 21:6-8 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

CONC: Many want to know Christ as the meek and lowly Jesus who was born in a stable and laid in a manger and went about doing good. And, I assure you he is that person. Some will give lip service to both his humanity and his deity and understand the necessity of both. Some will even concede that he is the one and only Saviour. And, you may know him as Saviour. But, your knowledge will not be complete, your understanding will not be perfect, your appreciation for his glory will fall far short, until you know him as judge, as the judge of his people rewarding the faithful, and as the judge of the wicked, handing down the awful sentence of everlasting punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, the second death. I would implore you in the words of the Psalmist, Psalm 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)

TEXT: Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

INTRO: There has, through the years, been much controversy concerning our subject this morning. The texts that I have read show that Christ is the one and only Saviour of sinners. Peter tells us in Acts 4:12 that there is salvation in no other ritual or person. There is no other name under heaven in which there is salvation. Jesus declared himself to be the only way to the Father. He is not a way. He is the way, the one and only way to the Father.

Men have set forth many different ways which seemed right to them. To some, the law is a Saviour if you will but try to keep it sincerely. To others church membership is the way to heaven but the church has never been set forth as the way to God. To some baptism and the Lord's Supper are the way to heaven. Some believe there is no salvation prior to baptism and regardless of how sincerely you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, there is just no salvation before baptism. And, you may not have it long after baptism if everything else does not fall into place properly.

Regardless of what men may say or how strongly and forcefully they proclaim it, I would inform you from the word of God, "You need to know Christ as the one and only Saviour. That is my subject, Knowing Christ as the One and Only Saviour of Sinners.

I. THE WORD OF GOD SETS FORTH CHRIST AS THE ONE AND ONLY SAVIOUR

A. Peter emphatically declares that there is no other Saviour. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

1. Note first his declaration that there is no salvation in any other.

2. He reinforces that declaration with the declaration that there is none other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.

3. If I closed this message now, we would have enough to prove that we need to know Christ as the one and only Saviour for this verse unequivocally proves that fact.

B.  Jesus declared that he is the one and only Saviour. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

1. He states the truth of this in the positive when he declares he is the way, the truth and the life.

2. He then declares this truth in a negative saying that no man can come to the Father except through him.

3. Now, we could surely close with these evidences, one by an inspired Apostle and the other by Jesus himself, but we will look further into the matter.

C.  The angel who announced the birth of Jesus declared Jesus to be the only Saviour. Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

1. His name means Saviour setting him forth above Moses, John the Baptist, and others whom men might look too for Salvation.

2. The angel, after commanding that his name be called Jesus, then tells why—he shall save his people from their sins.

a. He will do what the law could not do for all the law could do was to cause men to see their sins and themselves as sinners in need of a Saviour.

b. He could do what baptism cannot do for baptism is only an outward sign of an inward cleansing. 1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

D.   Paul, on more than one occasion, declared Jesus to be the only Saviour.

1. He declared him to be the only foundation and this foundation has already been laid, we do not lay it for ourselves. 1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

a. If there is no other foundation which can be laid why do men always seek other foundations upon which to base their hope for eternal life?

b. Since there is no other foundation, I must inform you that if you are building upon another foundation you are yet in your sins.

2.  Paul declared Jesus to be the only mediator between God and man. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

a. The apostle leaves doubt in the matter; there is one, and only one, mediator between God and man.

(1) That there is only one means there are not two or three or more.

(2) There is one, no more and no less.

b.  If you do not know Christ as your one and only mediator, you are without hope and without God.

E.   This truth is set forth again by John the Baptist. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

F. This truth was declared by the Saviour in these words found in John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

G. This truth was set forth very forcefully by John. 1 John 5:11-12 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

H. Consider the words of Jesus in yet another place. John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

I. Consider another declaration to this effect set forth by the Apostle Peter. John 6:68-69 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

1. The Lord had asked them if they would also go away as many had just done.

2. Peter realizes and sets forth that there is no other place to go if one is to have eternal life.

J.  This same truth is inferred in the declaration of Christ to some who did not believe on him. John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

K. It seems that this truth is again in the mind of Christ when he declared himself to be the door by which men come to salvation. John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

L. Many other declarations are found in the word of God but if these do not convince men that the one and only Saviour is the Lord Jesus Christ then 10,000 more declarations would not convince them.

II. THE WORD OF GOD SETS FORTH SOME REASONS WHY JESUS IS THE ONLY SAVIOUR

A. Since the salvation of sinners is the sovereign prerogative of God, then only one who is ordained of God to be the redeemer of sinners can be the Saviour. 1 Peter 1:18-20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.

B. Since salvation is dependent upon a Saviour who could render a sufficient satisfaction to God, only one who has rendered such satisfaction is worthy to be the Saviour. Isaiah 53:10-11 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

C. Since the Saviour of sinners must be able to mediate between God and man, one who can lay his hands upon both God and man can be the Saviour.

1. There is no way for sinful men to come before God except through an acceptable mediator. Job 9:32-33 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

2. Jesus is the one and only mediator and therefore the one and only Saviour. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

D.  The Saviour of sinners must be able to shed blood that will truly take away sin.

1. The blood of bulls and goats, regardless of the quantity and quality of those offered, could never take away sin. Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

2. Only the blood of Christ could obtain eternal redemption for sinners. Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

3. The blood of Jesus Christ is the only blood that can and does truly cleanse from sin, all sin. 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

E.  The Saviour must be one who lives forever to make intercession for those whom he would save and Christ is fit for the task. Hebrews 7:25-27 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

F. The Saviour must be able to offer up one sacrifice that will perfect forever those whom he would save and only Christ could offer such and offering. Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

G. The Saviour must be like his people, yet free from sin, in order to make reconciliation for them and only Christ could qualify for that. Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

H. The Saviour must be one made under the law and rendering a perfect obedience to the law, and also able to pay the penalty for his people's law breaking. Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.

I. The final thing I want to call to your attention is the fact that God alone, out of pure grace, could offer salvation to sinners.

1. He alone has the right to set the terms and means of salvation.

2. He sent his Son into the world to save sinners, to lay down his life for sinners. Mat. 1:21; John 10:15-18 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

3. Since it is his prerogatives to save, and it is his option to set the terms of salvation, and since he sent his Son to be the Saviour and endure all the sufferings involved in that, is it even thinkable that he might accept someone on any other terms of salvation?

4. God will not let another or another thing rob Christ of his glory as the one and only Saviour.

a. It is no wonder that Peter proclaimed Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

b. It is no wonder that Paul proclaimed 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

c. It is no wonder that Jesus declared John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

d. It is no wonder that John the Baptist declared John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

e. It is no wonder that the apostle John wrote 1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

CONC: Jesus Christ is the Saviour. He is not a Saviour; he is the one and only Saviour. Don't ask him to share the glory with any thing are any body else. The glory of saving his people from their sins is his and his alone. I said, "Don't ask him to share the glory with any thing or any body else." I assure you he will not. God will not allow men to add to his way of salvation. God will not allow men to mix other things into his saving plan. God will not allow any one to take anything away from his Son as Saviour, the one and only Saviour. Come to him or perish forever in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

KNOWING CHRIST AS OUR SECURITY

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)TEXT OF SERIES: Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

TEXT: John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one.

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

INTRO: When I think of Jesus Christ as my Saviour I automatically think of him as the one who truly saves from sin, from its guilt, its power, and its penalty. But, this is not true of everyone. Many freely call him the Saviour; they assure their listeners if they will trust him as Saviour he will save them from their past sins. But, when they get a little further, they start issuing warnings of the possibility that that salvation is only temporary unless they continued day after day and hour after hour and minute after minute meeting certain conditions.

They may allow that Christ is the author of out faith but argue that we are the finisher. They take from him the glory and honor for that aspect of our salvation which really makes it salvation, that is, our security. Though I know that most, if not all of you, fully believe that he is our security as well as our saviour, I want to call it to your remembrance again this morning. My subject is Knowing Christ As Our Security.

I. WE CAN KNOW THAT CHRIST IS OUR SECURITY BECAUSE OF HIS PROMISES AND PROCLAMATIONS

A. He promised eternal life. John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life.

1. He taught that the one believing on him had everlasting life. John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

2. He declared himself to be the bread from heaven and promised that those who ate that bread would live forever. John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

3. He assured that those who hear his word and believe on the one sending him has everlasting life. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life.

4. Time will not allow me to cite all those promises and assurances of eternal life given by Jesus Christ, but, I assure every promise and proclamation our Saviour made of eternal life assures our security.

a. This eternal life is in Christ; he is our life.

b. The security promised by Christ is in him, not in us; he is our security.

B.   He promised that those coming to him would never perish.

1. John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

2. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

3. John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish.

C.  He promised that those believing on him are not now condemned nor will they ever be.

1. The believer is not condemned at this very moment. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

2. The believer will not be condemned in the future. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

D.  He promised that those who come to him will never be cast out. John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

E. He assured us that none of those who come to him could ever be plucked out. John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

F. He promised that none of those who drank of the water which he gives, the water of eternal life, would never thirst again.

1. This was his promise to the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

2. This was his proclamation in his sermon to the multitude whom he had fed with a little boy's lunch. John 6:35 ". . . he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

G.  He promised that none of those who ate of the bread which he was giving would never hunger again. John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger.

H. He assured us with the declaration that it was the Father's will that he loose none of those given him by the Father. John 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

1. He always did the Father's will; he will always do the Father's will, and therefore promised he would raise us up at the last day. John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

2. Everyone drawn to him by the Father will be raised up at the last day. John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

3. Everyone eating his flesh and drinking his blood is given eternal life and will be raised up at the last day. John 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

II.   WE CAN KNOW CHRIST AS OUR SECURITY BECAUSE OF THE DECLARATIONS OF HOLY MEN OF GOD WHO SPOKE AS THEY WERE MOVED BY THE HOLY GHOST

A. Paul had absolute assurance that Christ was his security and he passed that on to us. 2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

B. John the Baptist has assured us that all who believe on the Son of God have everlasting life. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

C. Paul declared that Christ would save all who come to him to the uttermost. Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

D. Paul assured that all things work together for good to them who are the called according to God's purpose so all will be conformed to the image of Christ. Romans 8:28-30 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

E. Paul assured that there is no condemnation for those in Christ. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

F. Jude declared and assured that Christ is able to present us faultless before the presence of his glory. Jude 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.

G. Peter assured that through Christ we have an inheritance that is absolutely certain. 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

H. Paul declared that by his one offering Christ has obtained eternal redemption for us. Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

I. John assured us that the person who has Jesus Christ has eternal life. 1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

J. John assures us that Christ is our security when he proclaimed that Christ is the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

K. John assures us that Christ is our security when he declared that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. I Jn. 1:7

III.  WE CAN KNOW THAT CHRIST IS OUR SECURITY BECAUSE OF THE ARRANGEMENTS OF THE COVENANT OF GRACE

A. All the blessings and promises of the covenant are ours through Jesus Christ.

B. In that Covenant God the Father gave the Son a people to save. Jn. 6:37

C. In that Covenant God assured Christ that all those given to him would come to him. Jn. 6:37

D. In that Covenant God gave Christ Jesus power over all flesh enabling him to give eternal life to all those given to him. Jn. 17:2

E. In that Covenant God assured that he would cause the seed of Christ, those given to him, to endure forever. Psalm 89:28-29 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. Psalm 89:34-36 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

F. Jesus Christ is our surety in the covenant arrangements and he is a faithful surety. Hebrews 7:22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

CONC: I know Christ is my security because he is my surety, my sacrifice, my sin-bearer, my Saviour, my mediator, my great high priest, my shepherd, my daysman, my Lord and my God. I am safe in his hands while I live in this world. I am safe in his hands when I think of death. I am safe in his hands when I go into surgery. I am safe in his hands regarding judgment. I will be safe in his hands in eternity. For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)KNOWING THAT CERTAIN GIFTS AND GRACES WERE BESTOWED ON THE MAN CHRIST JESUS

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)TEXT: Isaiah 11:1-2 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

INTRO: When I brought the message on Knowing Christ as Man I proved his humanity by showing that there were certain gifts and graces which were essentially his as God, but which were given him as man. Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. The only exception ever found in the scripture to his being made like unto us is that he was without sin.

That being true, we can say that faith is a spiritual gift that must be given to men, then the Man Jesus Christ must be given faith. Since hope is a gift that must be given to man, then hope must be given to the man Christ Jesus. Since wisdom is something which must be given by God to men then wisdom must be given to the man Christ Jesus. Since the fear of the Lord is something that must be bestowed upon man, then the man Christ Jesus must have the fear of the Lord given him.

Don't ask me to explain all of this nor should you ask me when each of these were bestowed. Some seem to have been given from birth; others were attained as he grew. As he grew in stature he also grew in wisdom and in favor with God and man.

That he must have these things bestowed rather than just having them naturally gives us another measure of his condescension. When we think that he is God manifest in the flesh, yet he so condescended in being made man that he must have these gifts and graces bestowed by God tells us some idea of the measure of his condescension.

My subject this morning is GIFTS AND GRACES BESTOWED ON THE MAN CHRIST JESUS. I pray that God may give me the strength and grace to set this before you in the power and demonstration of the Holy Spirit.

 I. ISAIAH DECLARED THESE GIFTS AND GRACES WOULD BE BESTOWED UPON CHRIST

A. Isaiah declared they would be bestowed upon him. Isaiah 11:1-5 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

1. Please note in verse one the identity of the person under consideration. Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

a. He is a rod out of the stem of Jesse.

b. He is called the root of Jesse. Isaiah 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

c. He is a the Branch that shall grow out of the root of Jesse.

2.  In prophecy, Jesus is often referred to as the Branch.

a. He is the righteous branch. Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

b. He is the branch of righteousness. Jeremiah 33:15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

c. He is God's servant, the branch. Zechariah 3:8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

d. He is the man who is the branch. Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD.

B.   In the New Testament he is shown to be descended from Jesse and David as the prophecies we read have said he would be.

1. In Mat. 1:6-16 his lineage is shown to be from Jesse and David. Matthew 1:6-16 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; 7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; 8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; 9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; 10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; 11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: 12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

2. Christ was raised up of David's seed according to Paul as recorded in Acts 13:22-23 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus.

3. He was made of the seed of David according to the flesh. Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.

II.   THE GIFTS AND GRACES WHICH WERE BESTOWED UPON THE MAN CHRIST JESUS

A. The Holy Spirit was given to him. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him.

1. He was anointed with the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost.

2. The Holy Ghost was given to him without measure. John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

B.  Power was given to him. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might.

1. This power enabled him to preach the gospel with power and authority such as men of that day had never known.

2. This gave him power and authority to commission his church to do her work. Mat. 28:18-20

3. This gave him power to work the miracles he worked with such demonstration that men such as Nicodemus confessed he must be empowered by God himself. John 3:2 we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

4. This power enabled him to bear the sins of his people, lay down his life for his sheep and to endure the punishment due them for their sins. John 10:17-18 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

5. This God-given power enabled him to obtain eternal redemption for his people in his one sacrifice for sin. Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

6. This God-given power enabled him to perfect his elect forever. Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

C.  Wisdom and understanding were given to him. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding.

1. He grew in the grace of wisdom. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

2. There is no doubt in my mind that he grew in his understanding as a man.

3. This spirit of understanding that was given to him made him to be quick in understanding. Isaiah 11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears.

4. This spirit of understanding enabled him to judge in perfect righteousness or in absolute justice. Isaiah 11:3-5 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

5. The man Jesus Christ understood God's law as no other man ever has. Matthew 5:17-48 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. 21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. 41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

6. The Father delivered all judgment into his hand and anointed him with the spirit of understanding enabling him to judge in perfect justice and righteousness.

7. This reminds me of a passage near the end of the book of Revelation. Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

D.  Knowledge was given to Christ. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge.

1. As God he knew all things.

2. As man he must be given the spirit of knowledge; he must grow in knowledge, and yet there were some things he did not know. Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

3. It was through the spirit of knowledge that was given him that he was able to astound the doctors in the temple when he was only 12 years of age.

E.  He was given the spirit of counsel enabling and qualifying him to be the wonderful counselor as prophesied in Isa. 9:6. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel.

1. While on earth he gave counsel to men.

a. He warned men to repent or they would perish.

b. He advised men to come to him if they were to have everlasting life. Jn. 3:14-18

c. He counseled the weary and burdened to come to him for rest. Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

d. He counseled the hungry and thirsty to come to him and find the true bread from heaven and the water of life.

e. He counseled his disciples as to how they ought to live and to love one another.

f. He counseled those who were troubled in heart to not be afraid assuring them he would come again and receive them unto himself. Jn. 14:1-3

g. The spirit of counsel that was given to him enabled him to be wonderful in counsel. Isaiah 28:29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

F.   The man Christ Jesus was given the spiritual gift of faith.

1. One who is called faithful must have faith. Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 3:1-2 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; 2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

2. His cry, "My God, My God", just before his death on the cross is evidence of the faith of the man Christ Jesus. Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

a. This is not the cry of God, the Eternal Word.

b. It is the cry of the suffering man, Christ Jesus.

c. It is a cry that shows his faith in God even when forsaken in his suffering. "My God."

G.   The man Christ Jesus was given the spiritual gift of hope. Acts 2:26-27 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

CONC: Why study such things as I have set before you this morning? From my experience with preachers and others, I know that there are some who say something to this effect, "Emphasize the deity of Jesus Christ. Don't bring him down in the eyes of the people by discussing his humanity." I discuss these things with you for several reasons.

First, if we are to know Christ as we ought we need to know all the Bible says about his humanity as well as his deity.

Second, it will help us to understand more fully the extent of his humbling himself to be made man. He who is God so humbled himself in becoming man that he was dependent on the Father for all these spiritual gifts and graces to fulfill his work as Saviour of his people.

Third, it will deliver us from many errors concerning the person and work of Jesus Christ. For instance, I was taught in seminary that Jesus worked miracle to prove he was God, while the Bible declares him to be "a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him. (Acts 2:22). Rather than working miracles by his own inherent power as God he worked them by the power with which God had anointed him. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Let us not draw back from the clear cut teachings of Scripture for it is knowing the truth that we are set free from many errors. If we would truly know Christ we must know him as he is revealed in Scripture. It is in the written word that God has chosen to reveal all that we need to know of Christ.

KNOWING CHRIST AS THE CONQUEROR OF SATAN

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)TEXT: Gen. 3:15; Heb. 2:14-15; I Jn. 3:8

INTRO: In this series that I have called Knowing Christ, I have come to three or four sermons which I want to preach and I have really had a difficult time in deciding which order I would follow. I want to preach on Knowing Christ as the Conqueror of Satan, Knowing Christ as the Overcomer of the World, Knowing Christ as the One Having the Keys of Hell and Death, and Knowing Christ as the Destroyer of Death.

The last one was easy because that is yet future. There will come a day when Christ will destroy his last enemy which is death. It is our enemy also. Christ now, right now and ever since his resurrection, at least, has had the keys of hell and death, signifying his absolute authority over them, not simply because he is sovereign God but because he has invaded the vaults of death and hell and has subdued both as the glorified Son of Man.

I have chosen to speak to you first on the subject Knowing Christ as the Conqueror of Satan. The first gospel message this world ever heard is found in Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Before God pronounced judgment on the woman and told her of the pain and travail she would endure in childbearing, he gave the promise that Christ would come as the seed of the woman and conquer Satan. Before God pronounced judgment against the man causing him to labor and toil in an endless battle to earn his living, he promised that Christ would come as the seed of the woman and bruise the head of Satan. Before God had ever made clothing for Adam and Eve, he promised that Christ would come as the seed of the woman and conquer Satan. Before God had ever driven the man and woman out of the Garden of Eden, he promised that Christ would come as the seed of the woman and bruise the head of Satan.

It is a marvel of grace that God manifest his mercy before he pronounced his judgment. It reminds us that before the fall into sin by man had ever occurred, the everlasting covenant of grace and all its arrangements were settled in heaven. Before the cities of refuge were ever needed by and Israelite, God ordered them built. God never waits until there is a need before he prepares the remedy.

Now if we are to understand what it means to know Christ as the conqueror of Satan we must understand somewhat of the dominion of Satan. Then, we will see how Christ entered into the domain of Satan and conquered him. Thirdly we will look at the encouragement we should receive from Satan's defeat.

 I. THE DOMINION AND POWER OF SATAN

A. The dominion and power of Satan has never been unlimited by the power and sovereign rule of God.

1. Before the fall of man and before the death of Christ, Satan learned in a very harsh way that his power was limited to and under the government of God. Isaiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

2. When he would bring down Job and show him to only be serving God because of the blessings of God upon him he showed that he could only proceeded against Job as far as God permitted. Job 1:8-10 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

B.  Despite the limitations, Satan had great power in this earth to work his wickedness.

1. This power is signified by the various titles ascribed to him.

a. He claimed authority over the kingdoms of this world. Luke 4:6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

b. Three times Jesus called him the prince of this world. John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

c. Paul called him the god of this world. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

d. Paul also called him the prince of the power of the air. Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.

2.  The power of Satan is demonstrated in the things he is capable of doing.

a. He is very capable of deception. 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

b. He is capable of blinding the eyes of men to the truth of the gospel. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

c. He has all unbelievers under his power and dominion. Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. 1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. (the world whole in the wicked one lies). This is the same wicked one of verse 18. 1 John 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

d. He is able to give men the power to work miracles and lying wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.

e. Causes false teachers to transform themselves as apostles of Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

f. He is able to snatch the word away from the Matthew 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

g. He is able to plant false professors among the saved and in the Lord's churches.Matthew 13:38-39 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

h. He is able to instigate men to commit terrible acts of sin. John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him.

C.   Satan has the power of death.

1. He brought the death that God had threatened into the world through his deception of Eve. Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

2. He causes many to remain in a spiritually dead state. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

3. He is able to destroy the body of believers when disciplined by a church which amounts to physical death ultimately. 1 Corinthians 5:4-5 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Timothy 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

II.   JESUS CHRIST ENTERED THE REALM OF SATAN DEFEATED HIM IN HIS OWN ARENA

A. Satan is the God of this world and Jesus Christ came into this world. John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

B. In his crucifixion Jesus accomplished the casting down of Satan. John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

C. In his death Christ spoiled the kingdom of Satan. Colossians 2:14-15 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

D. Through his own death and being made sin Jesus Christ destroyed the control over men that he had through sin. Hebrews 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

E. Through his death, the bruising of his heel, the Lord Jesus Christ was able to bruise the head of Satan. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

1. He delivered his people from the fear of death and the grave. Hebrews 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

2. He extracted the sting from death and victory from the grave. 1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

3. He proclaimed liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison house of sin to those bound therein. Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.

4. It is no wonder Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

F.  Christ was manifested to destroy the works of the Devil and he did. 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

G. Christ has bruised Satan at other times since his death. Romans 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.

III.  THE ENCOURAGEMENT WE SHOULD RECEIVE FROM CHRIST'S DEFEAT OF SATAN

A. It assures us that we are hedged in even better than was Job and Satan cannot cross that hedge without divine permission.

1. Satan cannot touch our wealth without God's permission.

2. Satan cannot touch our health without God's permission.

3. Satan cannot touch our family without God's permission.

4. Satan cannot touch this church without God's permission.

B.  It assures us when trouble or tragedy does come that it must be for our good because Christ has bruised Satan and wrested his power over God's elect from him. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1. If God ordains that we endure some trouble there are not enough doctors, nor policemen, nor armies, nor guns, nor locked doors, nor locked gates, nor fierce watch dogs to keep out the enemy be they fallen angel, demon spirit or wicked men.

2. When God would have us left alone a military tank could not cross the invisible hedge he has about us.

3. While looking for a statement made by Spurgeon on the restoration of the nation of Israel I found this. Spurgeon said, "Where God guarantees safety, there safety is. All the princes of this world cannot make that man safe against whom God aims his arrow, but all the devils in hell cannot wound that man over whom the everlasting aegis (shield) is uplifted to keep him secure."

4. Let us ever remember the words of Elisha, 2 Kings 6:15-18 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

CONC: When the church at Rome was facing persecution Paul assured them in these words, Romans 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Let me assure you this morning that there is soon coming a time when Satan will experiencing such a bruising that he will be chained for 1,000 glorious years. He will not be able to hurt nor destroy for a golden millennium. When the thousand years are finished his final and eternal bruising will take place and he will suffer forever in hell.

Let us not fear nor waver. Let us fight the good fight of faith. Let us say with Paul, Hebrews 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. We have a Saviour who has gotten the victory over Satan at the cross. Let us not fear death for he has defeated him who had the power of death.

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)KNOWING CHRIST AS THE OVERCOMER OF THE WORLD

A Sermon By Wayne Camp

bargroovie1.jpeg (2818 bytes)TEXT: John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

INTRO: In chapters 14, 15, and 16 Jesus has been preparing his disciples for his coming death and departure from them. He began this address with the words, John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Now he closes it with the words, "be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." It is simply amazing to me that, in the face of the terrible suffering he is about to endure, he is so concerned with their troubled hearts. Such a Saviour we have. He is full of compassion for his saints. He is a merciful high priest and fellowships with us in our sorrows. And says, "be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

He warned them of the tribulation they would suffer before he comforted them with the words of our text. John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

In this message we will first ascertain of what world our Lord speaks. Then, we will determine the sense in which Christ is the overcome of the world. Finally, we will discover the reasons why this should cause us to be of good cheer.

I. ASCERTAIN OF WHAT WORLD OUR LORD SPEAKS

A. The world sometimes signifies the creation, this physical world. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him.

B. There is a world which God so love and which Christ came to save. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

C. The KJV often uses world to signify an age, an indefinite time period.

1. The disciples used this word when asking about the end of the age. Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world (aiwn)?

2. Paul used both the singular and the plural of this word when speaking of the wisdom of God in the crucifixion of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world (aiwnwn, ages) unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world (aiwn age) knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

3. Paul called Satan the god of this world and used the Greek word, aiwn, signifying this age. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

D.  This is another word which refers to the land, especially the inhabitants of the land. Revelation 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world (gh) wondered after the beast.

E. There is the world system or arrangement. Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world (kosmos), and the glory of them.

F. There is also the habital earth, the inhabited world. Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world (oikoumenh) should be taxed.

G. There is a world which lies in the devil, in Satan, that is under his control, that Jesus has in mind, when he declares that he has overcome the world. 1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

1. This is the world of which Satan is god. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

2. This is the world of which Satan is prince. John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

3. This is the world whose cries out in rebellion against God and his Christ. Psalm 2:1-3 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4. This is the world which hated the Lord Jesus Christ. John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

5. This is the world whose princes crucified the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

H.  There is a world for which Jesus would not pray, and that is the world which he has in mind in our text. John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

I. There is a world which has not known Christ and will not know him, and that is the world which he has in mind in our text. John 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

J. It is this world to which Jesus refers in our text.

1. It is this world in which his people will have all kinds of sorrows and tribulation.

2. It is this world in which we live as, at the same time, we live in Christ.

3. It is this world which our Lord has overcome.

II.   DETERMINE IN WHAT SENSE CHRIST HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD

A. He has overcome the allurements and pleasures of this world. Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

B. He has overcome the physical weakness of the flesh. John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

C. He overcame the temptations of this world.

1. All that is in the world that appeals to the sinful nature may be classified in three categories. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

2. He met every one of these temptations and overcame them without ever committing a single act of sin.

a. Satan used the lust of the flesh as his first temptation of Christ but Christ overcame that temptation. Luke 4:3-4 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

b. Satan used the lust of the eyes as his second temptation of the man Jesus Christ but he overcame this world temptation. Luke 4:5-8 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

c. Satan used the pride of life as his last temptation against Christ but Christ overcame this worldly temptation. Luke 4:9-12 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

D.   Christ has overcome the god of this world, as we learned last Sunday. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

E. Christ overcame the world by always remaining faithful to his task and true in his testimony. John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

1. He never compromised his message; he always spoke those words which were given him by the Father.

2. His words were spirit and life. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

F.  Christ overcame the world by never letting its flattery distract him from the truth. John 6:15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. John 6:26-27 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

1. When they murmured he kept on preaching the truth. John 6:41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

2. When they argued and reasoned among themselves Jesus kept on preaching. John 6:52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

3. When they complained about the hardness of his sayings, he kept on preaching. John 6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

4. When they went back and walked no more with him, he kept on teaching the truth to those who remained. John 6:70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

G.  Christ overcame the world by not giving in to its many comforts. Luke 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

H. Christ overcame the world by refusing to use its power. John 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

I. Christ overcame the world by refusing to even use God's power to deliver himself from its devices. Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

J. Christ overcame the world by fearlessly facing the religious elite and delivering scathing rebukes for their hypocrisy. Matthew 23:13-33 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. 14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. 16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

K. Christ overcame the world by fearlessly appearing before the political leaders of the day and denouncing them.

1. Listen to him set Pilate straight. John 19:10-11 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? 11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

2. Consider his response when warned about Herod. Luke 13:31-32 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee. 32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

L.  Christ overcame the world in his death.

1. He was delivered up by God for the very thing the world thought would destroy him and his mission. Acts 2:22-23 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.

2. When he permitted them to crucify him he was allowing them to do exactly what God had ordained should be done. Acts 4:27-28 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

3. The world ignorantly fell right into the divine plan without even having an inkling that they were doing so. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

M.  Christ has overcome the world by rising from the dead and ascending back to the Father.

1. This was such a victory that the chief priests and elders of the Jews gave large sums of money to try to cover it up. Matthew 28:9-15 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. 11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. 12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, 13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

2. This aspect of his victory is seen in the fact that the gospel of his death, burial and resurrection is still being preached 2,000 years later.

N.  Christ's victory over the world will be further revealed when every knee bows and confessing him to be Lord of all. Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

O. Christ's victory over the world will be further demonstrated when he is ruling it with a rod of iron and is truly manifest to the kings of this world as King of kings and Lord of lords.

III.  DISCOVER THE REASONS WHY THIS SHOULD CAUSE US TO BE OF GOOD CHEER.

A. If the man Christ Jesus overcame the world, we who are in him will overcome through the same power by which he overcame.

B. He overcame the world as our head and representative and his victory would not be complete if we who are in him as head did not overcome.

1. He is in us and we are in him and we have overcome. 1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

2. He has regenerated us and we have overcome the world. 1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

C.  This world is an enemy and it is filled with enemies but through his name we will overcome. Psalm 44:5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

D. There are many things in this world that would separate us from Christ's love but there is nothing that can. Romans 8:35-37 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

CONC: Now, let us go out and face the world with a smile on our face and joy in our hearts for we have overcome the world through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has fought the fight and he has won the victory. The world has its trials and tribulations but be of good cheer we are overcomers because he has overcome the world. In this world there is disease but it can never get the victory over us. In this world there is death, but it can never get the victory over us. 1 Corinthians 15:55-58 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
